Nothing to smile about

I had been waiting for a good horror movie to lead into the Halloween season. We saw the trailer for the movie Smile and knew this would be the one. As luck would have it, another member of the Stream Team had it on his radar as well and a few of us got tickets to an early access viewing. We gathered our snacks, found our seats, and shivered with anticipation as the theater filled up. The lights dimmed as the trailers started rolling. The audience began to silence and we all buckled in for what we knew would be a wild ride, except in the end, there were more frowns than smiles.

Rose is a psychiatrist who works long hours for little pay. She loves her job and it shows in the compassion she has for her patients. After a long shift she is leaving the office as she gets a last minute phone call. A new patient is being brought in and she felt it necessary to help in any way she can. She stays even later and meets the girl who explains that she is seeing something that is smiling at her. The patient has a breakdown and Rose runs to the phone to call for help. When Rose looks back, the patient has an unnerving smile and a piece of glass with which she uses to kill herself in front of Rose. Shortly after that, Rose begins noticing people smiling at her the same way. 

This movie is a Paramount Pictures film trying to be an A24 movie. The way they told the story, the tone of the music throughout trying to constantly swell up the feeling of dread, it did not conjure up a feeling of fear. This movie made the audience chuckle at scenes that seemed so serious. I was asked if they might have done it to be tongue in cheek, as if they were self aware. I, however, believe this movie took itself so seriously, it didn’t see the big picture. The main character did not know how to convey her distress to friends and family alike. She then found a companion who would help her to figure out more about the situation itself but refused to open up to them. 

It’s unfortunate that the lead character could not use her knowledge to express what was taking place. It seemed as though the supporting cast refused to acknowledge what was happening to Rose and this developed her psychosis further. In the end, this movie was jump scare after jump scare trying to be the next big horror film but it falls short in every aspect. The movie is predictable from beginning to end and uses a plot we are all too familiar with. I heard the joke while walking into the theater “Seven Days”.

All in all, this movie is a fun popcorn flick to laugh at with friends. Would I recommend this for the price of admission? Nah, this one is a movie I am glad I’ll get to talk about with friends a few years down the road. However, if you get the chance to rent this from Redbox for under $3, I would jump on it. As hokey as it was, it would be a good flick to watch at home with a bottle of wine.
