This science fiction neo-Western focuses on Royal Abott (Josh Brolin) and his fight to keep his Wyoming ranch from falling into the hands of the Tillersons, a rival family. Upon the discovery of a mysterious black void on his property and the arrival of a curious nomad (Autumn – played by Imogen Poots), the Abbott family’s already turbulent life is flipped upside down.
Josh Brolin delivers a stoic performance as Royal Abbott and is surrounded by a lovely supporting cast, including a Show Boys favorite in Tom Pelphrey (Ben Davis – ‘Ozark’). The series follows Royal as he attempts to unravel the mystery of the void, on top of holding the Abbott family together as they continue to cope with the disappearance of his daughter in law, Rebecca. Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) finds himself in a curious situation that puts the Abbott family in a precarious way; all while the Tillersons continue to acquire a portion of the Abbott Ranch by any means necessary.
Pelphrey, most recently known for his gripping performance as Ben Davis in the smash Netflix Original Series ‘Ozark’, delivers yet again. Perry commands your attention every moment he is on screen and Pelphrey continues to deliver amazing depictions of people struggling through immense grief or troubles. While Perry Abbott will quickly draw your attention, Lewis Pullman (Rhett Abbott), Lili Taylor (Cecilia Abbott) and Oliver Abercrombie (Amy Abbott) all fall into place perfectly around the main arch of ‘Outer Range’. This, coupled with great character performances in Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) and Billy Tillerson (Noah Reid) helps solidify nearly every moment of the series.
As the season unfolds, the main arch of Outer Ranges plays out rather well. Equal parts modern western and science fiction blend well from scene to scene and by the time ‘The Unknown’ (episode 7) hits its climax, every piece falls into place. The beauty of ‘Outer Range’ is the fact that this series works on multiple levels of depth as it entwines drama with mystery, western with science fiction and most importantly, is layered with depth and meaning drawing inspiration from the Greek Mythos of Kronos. Couple this with visually pleasing cinematography with breath taking panning shots of the Wyoming countryside (series filmed on location in New Mexico) and the periodic, but not rare, chilling acapella vocals of the one and only Noah Reid (Billy Tillerson) and you are left with a captivating 50 minutes of screen time that will hold your attention for every second of run time.
Releasing the premier episode on April 15, season 1 of ‘Outer Range’ came to a conclusion just over a month ago on May 6.
