Rumors have been abound that a sequel to the smash hit from Sucker Punch could be getting a sequel in the coming years. With various leaks hinting at the studios next project, along with the sales numbers of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, a sequel seems inevitable. But where could Sucker Punch go with a follow-up? Taking into account everything that panned out over the course of the story, we breakdown where we hope the studio takes Jin Sakai, in both location and story. Story spoilers may find their way into our points, so please use caution if you have not finished the original game.
The Move to Mainland Japan
While the location of the original made for an amazing journey, from the beautiful lighting to the stunning vistas, a move to mainland Japan seems like an obvious win. Tsushima made for an amazing location for the first entry in the studios Samurai story, however, elevating a sequel to surpass the original would require the move to a new island. With Iki Island getting a rendition in the story DLC for the title, the next move, without question, should be to mainland Japan. With the story elements in play, Jin seems destined to travel away from Tsushima. At the end of the story, Jin is given a major choice, one that we won’t spoil here, however, one of those decisions is seen as the “True Ending” of the game, which sees Jin embrace the identity of the Ghost, renouncing his lands and titles. With this becoming the basis of the new game, Jin would become a Ronin, a masterless samurai on the run. Tsushima seems like an unsafe place for our protagonist to remain, the larger area of mainland Japan would give Jin the anonymity that he needs. Sucker Punch can also use this larger, more populated location to build a more breathing world, one removed from the grips of the mongol invasion.
Jin Becomes a Wandering Swordsman
With the move to mainland seemingly an absolute, and the story elements discussed earlier, this seems like the direction Sucker Punch was heading at the end of the story. Renouncing his lands and titles, Jin appears to be heading a different path than his uncle had wished. The topic of many samurai movies sees wandering ronin traveling the country side throughout feudal Japan. Making landfall on mainland Japan, Jin would have an entire country to explore, without any of the royal ties he had in the first game. During the true ending of the game, Jin’s uncle warns him that the Shogun will come for him, leaving the perfect start to our sequel. Yojimbo, Rurouni Kenshin, and many more samurai tales tell a similar story, which could elevate the freedom seen in the sequel. The ability to embrace the wandering and literally go anywhere you want to go. Helping struggling towns fight against bandits, becoming the middle man for military disputes, all while fighting off the Shoguns warriors. While many of Japans major military conflicts wouldn’t have happened for another hundred years or more, leaving a more peaceful time to explore, free of any major wars. But there would still be many jobs a wandering ronin could find himself in the middle of. The studio could also take this opportunity to break away from the historical path that followed the invasion of Tsushima, telling the story of Japans civil war far earlier than it actually took place. Whether the studio will want to remain true to history will remain to be seen.
More Roleplaying Elements to Heighten Immersion
One thing that the original lacks, are various in game immersion tools for the player to get lost in. Sure the variety of the objectives laid out in the game are varied, helping to keep the exploration fun and interesting, however, in-world elements can go a long way to bring players deeper into the experience. While it may not make sense for some of these to happen during the Mongols invasion of Tsushima, the move away from this historical event could leave many options available. Inns for the players to rest in to regain health and resolve, bath houses to visit and relax, larger towns with food options and more meaningful vendors, and Dojos to learn new tactics could all help to sink the player deeper into Jin’s journey. With Jin traveling throughout a much more populated location, free from the horrors of war, a more lived in world could go a long way to deepening the experience. Allowing players to stumble across various sword schools, all of which have their own unique sword style that Jin can challenge and overcome to learn new stances or tactics for his journey. One of the most famous samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, traveled the countryside of Japan as a wandering swordsman, gathering the reputation of a formidable fighter, which Sucker Punch could use as the basis for Jin’s next adventure; couple this with more populated locations, with large cities and villages to explore, and get lost in. This would help elevate the sequel to a level seen in The Witcher 3 and other massive roleplaying games.
New Weapons Options
While the Katana is the most famous weapon of the samurai, it was far from the only weapon used by these incredible warriors. Giving the players new choices, in the vein of the more recent Assassins Creed games, could lead to endless replay value for the sequel. Lances, Kusarigama’s, Tachi’s, Odachi’s, and other weapons from the era, could give players the variety lacking in the original game. The replay value would shoot through the roof with many different weapons to use and experiment with, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. Giving players radically different experiences depending on the weapon they take on their journey. This simple move could keep the sequel in the limelight for far longer than the first game. Allowing the player to combine these weapons with various different stances, armor, and ghost tools could leave players sifting through the content for years to come.
More Customizable Options for Jin
Along with different clothing and armor options, Jin could use more personal customization as well. Giving the player more control over Jins clothing, hair styles, and weapon appearances would only heighten the deepness of a sequel. In the original there was no way to change the characters hair, leaving players with a smaller amount of customization. Alongside Jins physical appearance, it would be nice to see more options for the players armor and weapons as well. In the original, you were tied to predetermined armor with various dyes, as well as pre-made sword kits that all looked different. Giving the player the ability to fully customize their weapons looks, with various Ito wraps, blade colors, and other options helps to give players more control over their Jin. Allowing players to control the look of armor as well, with various belts and accessories, adds to the depth of the game. Let us not forget the ill-fated arrow quiver we couldn’t remove in the original release of the game. The option to remove any and every piece of armor or equipment from the player and the horse are a requirement for modern role playing games, especially ones with historical ties.
A Heavier Dose of Rich Side Quests for a Break from the Main Story
One thing the sequel could learn from ‘The Witcher 3’ is the sheer amount of content dumped into that title. While many players complained of the amount of side content in the third ‘Witcher’ game, one thing remains true, players are still playing the title today, trying to complete its massive catalog of content. With the amazing groundwork laid in ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, Sucker Punch has the chance to give players the definitive samurai experience, which will keep them busy for years to come. Many classic samurai movies see wandering swordsman travel from town to town, solving each towns problems before moving on. Something ‘The Witcher 3’ nails with a medieval fantasy setting instead of a historical feudal Japan time frame. This all goes back to more populated towns, and varied content to complete in said towns. Implementing a message board system for each town where citizens of the town can post their problems, which Jin can choose to solve or ignore, could help give the feeling of the wandering samurai, as well as give players a nice break from the main story. Ghost of Tsushima 2 has the chance to deliver on the deepest roleplaying game seen since ‘The Witcher 3’.
Meaningful Choices
One thing that the original game played on heavily was Jins descent into the Ghost, leaving behind his samurai upbringing and forming a new way to fight his enemies. However, little in the way of meaningful choices between the two styles were presented in the game. While the entire story is built around the choice to fight from the shadows or face your enemies head on, whichever you chose had no bearing on the story that panned out. If players remained true to their samurai roots, the story would eventually see Jin becoming the Ghost anyways. Giving the sequel a mechanic to lean one way or the other would also go to heightening the depth of the gameplay. With a system similar to the ones seen in ‘Infamous‘ and ‘Mass Effect‘, players could actually control the path of Jin as he navigates his next adventure, allowing for the characters in the game to treat you differently depending on which side of the aisle you find yourself on. The samurai would look down upon Jin for the cowardly style of the Ghost, while citizens would embrace the warrior Jin has become; yet another system to help each player carve their own path through the sequel.
